The December issue of Mikroniek features the theme of systems engineering & design methodology. It focuses on the Dutch approach to systems engineering (SE) at high-tech companies, knowledge institutions and universities (of technology and of applied sciences). Concrete examples include SE of a wafer-handler, design of a large dynamic range atomic force microscope (LDR-AFM) and the concept of conformal wafer loading. The impact of data analysis and artificial intelligence on design practice is illustrated by an extensive article on bio-inspired design. A highly topical contribution is concerned with the thermal analysis of vaccine carrier performance (keeping vaccines cool but not too cold). To conclude, brief reviews are presented of two DSPE highlights, i.e. the online presentations of the Wim van der Hoek Award and the book on Van der Hoek. Click here for a first impression.
